Ears

Is there a non-surgical alternative to correct protruding ears?

The ear, for having a cartilaginous structure, requires a surgical intervention for its correction. The use of adhesives (bandages) only mask the problem.

What is the minimum age for protruding ears surgery?

The recommended age for surgery is the preschool period (up to 6 years); to avoid mocking and embarrassing the (small) patient.

How is the surgical process?

It is a process performed in a hospital environment, under local anesthesia, with or without sedation or even general anesthesia. Usually the hospital stay is 12 hours. A surgical modeling of the auricular cartilages (with incisions and stitches) is performed, giving a new shape of the ear. The final scar will be hidden behind the ear.

How is the postoperative?

In the postoperative period, dressings are placed that will remain for approximately 4 days. After removing the dressing, done in the office, the patient resumes his routine activities. The process is painless. Earrings and ornaments can be used immediately, after removing the dressing.

Macrotia (“Super developed” ears / Increased in size)

What is macrotia?

They are ears usually present in individuals over 50 years old, where an increase in auricular cartilage is evident.

How is macrotia corrected?

The process is surgical, and aims to correct the part of the cartilage and also the excess skin of the lobes (usually increased by the use or not of heavy earrings).

The surgical process (pre and postoperative) is identical to the correction of protruding ears.

Microtia (“Undeveloped” / Absent Ears)

What is microtia?

It is the total or partial absence of the ear, and there may sometimes be an ear of reduced dimensions.

How is microtia corrected?

Ear reconstruction is very complex, it requires cartilage and skin grafts, or even the use of pre-molded silicone prostheses, very ingenious. If there are problems related to the auditory canal or the inner ear, the collaboration of an ear specialist (otorhinolaryngologist) is absolutely essential.

Ear Lobe “Increase / Fall or Descent”

(Hypotrophic Ptosis)

What is lobe ptosis? And how is it corrected?

This type of problem can affect elderly people or those who overuse very heavy earrings. The ear lobe yields, “falls” and stretches, and is also sometimes “withered” and thin (thin). The correction is simple and done by a surgical technique; and can be performed in an office.

Once corrected, can the lobe give way again?

The constant use of heavy earrings can increase the lobes, or even tear them again.

Torn Ear Lobe / Bifid Lobe

What is Lobule Bifidus?

It is an increase in the ear hole by the use of heavy earrings, or even by local trauma (earrings pulled out).

How is it corrected?

It is a simple procedure performed in the office, with resection of the scar skin and suture with delicate threads. The final scar is barely noticeable and earrings can be used after 2 months.
